Starring (Slaaviq) music

[1]              This is a koliadi, (a “starring,” or Christmas caroling) song from Alaska as remembered and written down by Michelle Quick Charles, who learned it in Ouzinkie. With the help of the late Lydia Black and Russian ethnomusicologists Izaly Zemtsovsky and Elena Vasileva, we have restored some of the grammatical endings blurred in oral transmission. We are unclear if the differences in these lyrics and the modern Ukrainian version are because of a change in dialect or because some mispronunciations have crept in.
